All right, it’s time to tell you how to win that fitness makeover. You know how I have been talking about First Fashion Friday coming up on August 1? Well, to kick off the events, the Hawaii Athletic Club in Aloha Tower Marketplace is offering a free fitness makeover to a lucky participant.
Interested makeover candidates should email info@alohatower.com with a photo and a short narrative on why they should win the fitness makeover by July 30. Finalists will be selected before August 1; the winner will undergo a fitness program until the finale on October 3.
You can also listen to KQMQ to call in to win, but I think this is harder to achieve! In any case, you’ll be doing a fitness makeover like their DJs: Today, Miss Chanel joined the challenge along with me and Chris Hughes. As you can see, they have different fitness goals, and we figure you do, too.
I cannot stress enough that whoever wins this, has to stick with the program or it won’t work!
Even if you don’t try to enter to win the makeover, come to our free events anyway! The first one is on August 1 at 6 p.m. Learn fashion and beauty tips from a panel comprised of Alyson Helwagen of LeiChic.com and celebrity stylist Crystal Pancipanci; and a fashion show presented by Shane Takeshita of iCandi Hawaii.
Be watching www.alohatower.com/fff.html to see what direction our online magazine takes you this year! All right, time to go shop.
Yayyyy I’ve finally found people to take part in a fitness challenge with me! As we get ready for our upcoming First Fashion Friday on August 1, the team at KQMQ and the Hawaii Athletic Club agreed to give away a free fitness makeover to a lucky listener and a lucky web reader.
I’m not going to put the details here (yet) but keep listening to KQMQ or visit www.alohatower.com/fff.html in about a week to find out how you can win.
Meanwhile: two of the jocks, Miss Chanel and Chris Hughes, are going to join the challenge, too. We brought Chris in to do a fitness assessment and check his body fat (which is non-existent).
As you can see by the size of his arms vs. Ray Sagum’s arms, Chris’ goal is to increase his upper body strength and definition.
Our sales rep, Christa Wittmier, got so into it that she measured her body fat, as well. I’m not going to post their stats here, but will discreetly leave it to them to post in the comments if they wish.
Anyone else up for the challenge?? Maybe you can win a free three-month makeover, if you want to kick-start your fitness quotient. Just listen to KQMQ or visit my website!
It’s been about 6 weeks, and I haven’t lost much poundage per se, but remember: muscle weighs three times more than fat. If you touch the back of my arms now, they’re no longer marshmallows. My blood pressure - the big catalyst for this workout routine - is now down to 124/60.
It’s easy to get discouraged when you don’t see the scale moving, so most (if not all) trainers forbid you from using it, especially in the beginning.
One example is my new hero, Hooters GM Dave Hart. I didn’t think he was ever fat, but apparently he hid it well. When he started working out at the Hawaii Athletic Club four months ago, he had 32 percent body fat. Do you know how high that is?! The average body fat percentage for men is usually 15 to 20 percent. For women, it’s about 22 to 26 percent. OK, maybe I heard wrong, but even at 22 percent body fat, Dave was chunkin. (I’ll double check on that and get back to you.)
Today, he’s a lean machine at just 18 percent body fat. In just four months! I know that results vary, but Dave does, in fact, work out regularly and encourages his employees to do the same.
To help with my progress, HAC GM Ray Sagum has asked me to cut out carbs at night. He knows I can’t cut carbs completely due to my running, and he doesn’t want me to go on a diet that will cause me to binge, so just one small concession should help.
In the meantime, the HAC has opened a smoothie & juice bar, incorporating many natural ingredients in made-to-order items that you can consume as meal replacements, with more nutrients and none of the fat found in a plate lunch. Our company’s Grand Poobah, Mark Babin, visits Duffy (left) at the HAC almost every day to get a healthy blend of fruits and vegetables. He says you can customize most of the menu items to your liking, like cutting out beets or adding more ginger, or adding your own protein powder.
They recently added a yummy selection of Açai bowls, which is fast becoming a popular lunch. For just $6.25, you get a saimin-bowl-sized container with a yogurt-like mix of açai, apple juice, honey, and (I think) hemp milk. It gets topped with bananas, strawberries, blueberries, and granola, and you can add your own honey to taste. Mmmmm. It’s not too sweet, and keeps you filled without making you feel full. Best of all, for such a healthy meal, it doesn’t taste like a blend of sticks and rocks.
You don’t have to be an HAC member to enjoy the food they serve. After that, though, you might want to be!
Hawaii Athletic Club ~ Aloha Tower Marketplace across Hooters (and Dave the Lean Machine)
I just started a new fitness routine on March 20 and will track my progress on my blog. The first couple of weeks were a little thrown off, as we’ve been adjusting to MyAdvertiser.com’s new platform.
I decided to try the Hawaii Athletic Club (HAC), located across Hooters in Aloha Tower Marketplace, since it is ultra convenient to my workplace. (Don’t get me wrong, I am still a member of Central YMCA. But given the weird hours I put in, I ALSO need something close since I can’t always run home for a workout.) I’ve been running for years, and used to do weight training, but the weight training has waned and I have absolutely no upper body strength.
In addition: at my last job, it was so stressful that I ended up gaining a LOT of weight, not to mention a host of health problems. After I got to Aloha Tower Marketplace, the health problems immediately disappeared, but the weight has not. HAC owner Ray Sagum suggested that, although I run 2-3 times a week, I might need to jump-start my metabolism.
The first thing they do is weigh me, then use a state-of-the-art machine to measure my body fat. HAC’s machine is more accurate than calipers, and a lot less intrusive. My fat is at 28 percent; our goal is to get me down to the 19 – 22 percent range. I’ll tell you more about my weight and post the “before” photos once the progress starts to show!
“We’re going to ‘tear’ the muscle, and build it back up,” Ray explained. I do legs on Monday, arms on Tuesday, a full hour of cardio on Wedesday, then harder reps on Thursday and Friday. Unlike previous weight training programs I’ve done before, these are timed—I have to do 15 reps of each exercise in 30 seconds. Each exercise has 5 sets of 15, with 5-second breaks in between. These don’t just test my strength, they push my cardio, and I end up sweating as much as I do when I run! (I still run 2-3 times per week.)
I’ll tell you more about the exercises as I go along, as well as the diet recommendations. I hope to get these check-ins once a week. In the meantime, I have put out an inquiry to various people to get a “challenge” together. Anyone want to join me? We can track our progress together, either on separate blogs or consolidated on this one. Email me! Let me know!
First milestone: For the last 6 months, my blood pressure suddenly got elevated again. It was in the 160-170 range up until a few weeks ago. Well, this week I went to the doctor, and it’s plummeted to 136/66! Still slightly elevated, but pretty darn good.
