Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives comes to Honolulu

October 22nd, 2009 by Melissa

I'm not sure if people know about this, but Twitter has been buzzing for the last few weeks about the fact that the Food Network show "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" is coming to Hawaii. Restaurants who were on the Food Network's "short list" were prepping to get the call, hoping that host Guy Fieri would visit them.

Fieri hank blog

Well, he made his rounds: Highway Inn, The Poke Stop, Murphy's (huh?), Rainbow Drive In, Germaine's Luau (huh?) and Hank's Haute Dogs. I was lucky to get the call from Carol Kellett, who wanted us to be a part of the production at Hank's. We got to see Henry Adaniya get interviewed, above.

Carol & I didn't get on camera, but we were jazzed just to be able to get up close to watch the production! We also enjoyed our Chicago and rabbit dogs outside.

Fieri and meI couldn't help getting Henry to let me grab a picture with Guy, either! I then posted this on Facebook, which drew a lot of reaction. I like the show, but had no idea so many others did, too!

We don't know when this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives is supposed to air, but we're glad the show decided to visit Hawaii. Word on the street says that they got so much footage, it may be broken into two episodes. Hopefully it will get more people here to Hawaii!

    Hello Melissa!

    You lucky dog.

I watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives every week! He seems like a great person and funny too.

  2. Cindy:

Cool! Glad to see they are filming in Hawaii and that you got to be a small part of it! You live such the life! :-)

  3. Ynaku:

Whoo Hoo, Guys da bomb! You folks should have gone into the shots. Maybe get your SAG card and be Movie Stars :P

BTW, That's not Henry in the pic with you ;)

  4. D:

They also filmed at Poke Stop Mililani. I was there on Sunday when they were filming close ups so Guy Fieri wasn't there. I overheard the camera crew saying their other crew was at Nico's - FYI.

  5. wes:

Nice Melissa808! BTW didn't they also do Highwayinn last week?

  6. Melissa:

D, wes: Yes, they went to the Poke Stop & Highway Inn....I have it listed there under the photo with Hank & Guy....

M, Cindy: It was neat to watch, and the crew didn't seem as uptight as other TV crews have been. Believe me, I've worked with some...

Ynaku: That was a hastily written blog! I edited it.

  7. Rodney Lee:

    @M - don't you mean:

    Hi Melissa!

    You lucky haute dog.

  8. Rodney Lee:

I wonder if they'll be visiting Side Street Inn?

pssst, Melissa - Lil' Oven...

  9. Craig:

It's one of my fave shows! I am so J that you got to meet Guy.

  10. Melissa:

Hi Rod! Actually, Highway Inn suggested Little Oven to the show when they were scouting 3 weeks ago. I don't know if they put Side Street on the list. But if the restaurants didn't get a call last week, they wouldn't be filming. That part was planned in advance.

Craig, I went to Mickey's Diner in St. Paul because of this show!

  11. Rodney Lee:

Melissa - YOU should do a take-off of the show (just for fun) and do a Little Oven video. And post it here the week that D3 shows the Hawaii episodes.

  12. che:

Wow first Dirty Jobs was in Hawaii and now this show. It's one of my favorite shows on the Food Network. I'll have to watch out for it. Thanks for the info.

  13. Rodney Lee:

You know, if opso changed his hairstyle, he might pass for Guy.

Okay, an Asian version of Guy. LOL

  14. HNL2LAS:

OOOhhh one of my fave shows! Melissa, how lucky that you got to see the filming/interview and got to meet Guy Fieri! I luv watching him, my fellow UNLV'er!!! Diners, drive-ins and dives are my favorite places to go, and there are soo many places I'd like to try after seeing them on his show!

  15. BananaFysh:

    Wow! Awesome! :)

I like Guy Fieri -- he seems like a genuinely nice guy. I voted for him when he was a contestant on The Next Food Network Star. ;)

Looking forward to watching that episode! :D

  16. CatDogMan:

I saw Guy at the Aerosmith concert. I was up in the nose bleed seats and looking at the people in the front rows with my binoculars and there was Guy. You cannot mistake that hair. Lots of folks were having their photo taken with him. I like his show as well. He just seems to love food so much. Aerosmith was pretty good too.

  17. James:

That Hawaii is becoming a culinary destination is a fact. Tourists will be flocking to Hawaii to dine at special spots. This is great publicity, just what we need in trying times.

Now, if only the show would wise up and shoot footings of some of our pretty local women, like the Chinese kind, to spice up the ratings.

  18. Mr.Song:

Wow, I watch the show and am happy they will be covering Hawaii. If you find out when they will be airing the segment, please let us know.

  19. Warrior Dave:

Guy's show is the bomb and the braddah can grind!!!

  20. KAN:

Wooohooo! Glad to see Hawai`i restaurants getting their props. Guy featured my favorite Seattle breakfast place, Voula's Offshore Cafe, in an early episode, and the folks at Voula's and Guy have remained friends. When Guy's in Seattle, he stays with them. The Voula's folks say he's exactly like how he appears on t.v. - genuine and fun. No high makamaka airs.

  21. KAN:

Also, fwiw, Guy's featured Hawaiian food before on DDD: Bobby's Hawaiian-Style Restaurant in Everett (north of Seattle).

  22. opso:

awww......too bad you didn't get some air time. is this the "Guy" in that TGI Friday's commercial? i have only watched his show a few times.

    Largo - okay.....new "do" coming up! :D
or better yet.....try using your photoshop skeelz. ;)

  23. BananaFysh:

    Hmmm? Someone say "Photoshop?" :)

    ;)

    muahahahahha!!

  24. NeedaHobby:

Cool! ;) I enjoy watching that show. I'm glad that Guy has had success after being the Next Food Network Star. The other winners don't seem to be as successful. :(

I'm glad that Hawaii is getting more exposure. First, Man vs. Food and now DDD. ;)

  25. snow:

awww, i love that show! i think guy fieri is great! he was my favorite when he was on the next food network star, too - he has so much personality! glad that he's giving hawaii some exposure - and i hope he's enthusiastic about the food, too!

  26. 'Sa:

OMGosh!!! How cool!!! Rod and I actually check out Guy's list of places he has featured on DDD, and we try to visit them if we are in the area. Love his show!

  27. Melissa:

Rodney, those are all very good ideas! Esp now that I have a video camera!

Che, HNL2LAS, CatDogMan, Mr. Song, Warrior Dave, KAN, NeedaHobby, snow: I heard that the show will actually not air till early 2010.

    James, I agree!! LOL

opso, Bananafysh, I'm very good at Photoshop!! Hmmmmmmm

sa, I do that, too! That's why I went to Mickey's Diner in St Paul!

  28. jlieu:

O-M-G I am SOOOO Jealous! Omg did you hug Guy? I totally want his racoon tan! :D I heart Rainbows and Hanks Haute Dogs! :D

  29. 1dble:

    Love that show!

You mentioned that the crew was real nice... I was at 8 Fat Fat 8 lst week when they dropped in (the crew). Those guys were a riot! Singing and dancing around, I had a blast just watching them. One of the guys sang Copacabana... too funny!

  30. Kaimana Pine:

Very cool! Love that show, he's so passionate about food and televising it. Wonder if Hank's ever makes a hot dog for pescetarian's? Cool article, mahalo!

  31. Melissa:

Kaimana, he does!! It's called the Lobster Dog. I think it's a special only on Fridays, though.

  32. Pearl City Teacher:

This is where they should have gone.....

    1-Helena's Hawaiian Food
    2-Thelma's Filipino Restaurant
    3-Side Street Inn
    4-Liliha Bakery
    5-Million Restaurant

  33. Rick:

Thanks for the article Melissa! I'm so pumped that he's in Hawaii so now I have another reason to visit :) Jenn and I have gone to Utah and Albuquerque (ear infection there but still fun). We are definitely going to Hawaii. I hope they air soon.

  34. Rick:

Thanks for the post, it's good to see him finally get out there. I can't wait to visit!
