Twestival: A worldwide event for a single cause

February 7th, 2009

If you're like me, as a typical American, you probably take basic living comforts like electricity and fresh running water for granted. Right now, however, 1.1 billion people don't have access to clean, safe drinking water. That's one in six of us!

Many communities in developing nations often have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water just below the ground, but no way to get to it. Drilling a well can cost from $4,000 - $12,000 and many living on less than $1 a day cannot afford one in their community, even if the money is combined. Well, a nonprofit called charity: water works toward making freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters where they can.

OK. You know I'm active on Twitter. So are a gazillion other people around the world. So here's the concept: what if all the twitter users mobilized globally on one day to help a good cause?

Twestival Honolulu

On Thursday, February 12, Hawaii’s social media community is organizing a grassroots, 100 percent volunteer-driven effort to raise money for charity: water. It's part of a worldwide effort, with events happening around the globe on the same day. For just $20 per person (online presale), you get a pupu buffet and two drinks, plus live local entertainment. It's being held, appropriately, at Oceans 808 (formerly Ocean Club) at Restaurant Row.

AIG Hawaii is so turned on by the effort, they're donating $5 for every ticket sold (online or at the door). Various companies have generously donated fabulous prizes for the raffle happening that night, too.

All that aside, it's also a great chance for you to meet up with your favorite online Tweeps, including some bloggers.

I hope I get to see you at the event!
