Photo Update on the Falls of Clyde

July 23rd, 2008 by Melissa

Falls of Clyde as of 7/21/08

About a month ago, the Maritime Museum started to dismantle the historic Falls of Clyde. It didn’t seem real at the time, even though we can see it happening every day right outside our window.  Here’s what it looked like as of yesterday.

I hope that the Falls of Clyde will be saved and not scrapped.

  2. Tankobu:

Wow, a picture is worth a thousand words. Very sad to see the dismantling!

Typical Bishop Museum.. turning hiostory into a garbag scow. I bet if some dead hawaiian princess had gotten drunk on board.. they be truing it into a national treasure… maybe it’s time to rethink out state priorities and close down the ever-almost-bankrupt Bishop Museum and let Sotheby’s auction off those moldy old capes and clabashes.. that would raise a few million and use the money to turn the kapalama campus into transit stop for Gufi’s choo choo train.

  4. Miss J:

Aww sad! I cannot believe how bad it is!

  5. CatDogMan:

It’s beginning to look like a barge. What a shame.

  6. Kel Sr.:

    Aloha Melissa,

That’s what happens when there isn’t an active maintenance program by the museum! Too bad!

Now it would be cost prohibitive to try to restore it! Got a $$Million or more to restore it? Maybe you can start a “Save the Falls of Clyde” non-profit group/association!

Look at the foreign countries 3 and 4 masted vessels, IMMACULATE and HIGHLY MAINTAINED!

Not to show our age, remember the Oceania with the Chinese restaurant and shops?

    Make time stand still, laddie!!!

    Aloha Melissa,

I was on Oahu last week and sat in a conference room overlooking Aloha Tower. I had a view similar to one that you showed awhile ago on this blog. Think it was a view from your office.
Anyway, as I sat in the conference room, I noticed the Falls and couldn’t believe how buss up it looked. Did not realize that it had already been dismantled.
    Very sad.
    Thanks for sharing the picture.

I know, if you compare it to last month’s photo (http://urbanmixplate.honadvblogs.com/2008/06/25/ahoy-falls-of-clyde/), it’s really sad! Just imagine–we see this every day.

I’ll post more progress photos as the dismantling goes along.

And yes, Kelvin, I DO remember the Oceania! I ate there!

  10. Melissa K:

I remember going to the Falls of Clyde when I was a Brownie.
Sad, sad, sad! Start singing “Big Yellow Taxi”. That’s the way of the world…thanks for showing us photo.

  11. Koauka:

I saw it out the window this afternoon too. I remember visiting the ship as a kid, and as I got older, some pretty cool parties on board.

Gonna be a sad day when it leaves.

  12. Dr. Peabody:

Today, they removed the really Haole Lady figure from the front. Tough to think about it beign completely gone now.

  13. San Diego Swanny:

Back in 1999, I had the privilege of spending a full week on board the Falls of Clyde, working with the Living History Education overnight program from Orange County, sleeping in a hammock on the poop deck at night. Saw much disrepair at that time and was extremely dismayed. One ship’s keeper was not enough. History will be sadder for the physical loss of one the last full-rigged four masted ships. Shame on those people who are selling parts from her like vultures picking apart a carcass. Fair winds and following seas Falls of Clyde!
