Goma Tei Ramen makes me heart their soup
July 20th, 2008 by MelissaI was trying to teach Mari the art of retail therapy yesterday in baby steps. I took her to Ward Center to check out Red Pineapple, which was having a “Christmas in July” event. I thought it would be a sale, but it was not quite. Cute stuff though.
Anyway, after toodling around Borders for a while, we got hungry, so we stopped in at Goma Tei Ramen and…..

Well. That alone tells you that Goma Tei must be the place to see and be seen. (Today I passed by and saw my nephew Jeff with his GF Loni, and our controller Aileen with her DH Dale.)
Anyway, we copied Yong & Christa and ordered the same tan tan ramens—vegetable, and wakame ($7.75). I wasn’t really sure if I would like a veggie ramen, especially since I’m not into soups, but this was exceptional. Since the ramen is from Sun Noodle, it is just the right chewy consistency. They aren’t chintzy with the vegetables or wakame, either—it’s quite filling on its own and you never, ever run out of topping with your noodle. What really got me was the soup was exceptionally tasty. Remember, I’m not into soup…but this, I kept slurping up as if it were my last meal. It’s got just the right amount of spice that it doesn’t overpower the flavor of the food itself.

I was eyeballing Yong & Christa’s fried chicken, but alas….Mari really wanted to be healthy. So we ordered the Ban Ban Ji Chicken ($6.75). It’s basically a boiled chicken, served cold in slices over julienned cucumber and topped with a special sauce. I’m sure we did our bodies good by eating this over the fried chicken, but each piece was hit or miss. Some pieces were dry and/or tough, some were very good. Since I had already been eating the very tasty ramen, the Ban Ban Ji Chicken’s effect on me was virtually wasted. I really didn’t sense any taste on my buds. Mari said the sauce was very good, though, so that shows you the different strokes for different folks.
Next time if I’m hungry, Yong highly recommends the ultimate treat/splurge is to order the Seafood Tan Tan ($10.50) because it has everything in it. Hmmm….at this blog posting, it’s almost time for dinner…..

Master Song returns!
Goma Tei is crazy good! Too bad my dates haven’t like it much. Then again, they weren’t Japanese, so maybe their palette isn’t as open to “Nihon Ramen.”

I’m not Japanese, and neither is Yong! Or my nephew. Perhaps this does not speak to your date’s taste in food, but your taste in women.
“I’m just saying.”

Hahahaha… After careful review of my hunts over the past couple of years, I am beginning to think there is truth your assessment.
Secondly, I forgot to ask for clarification of “DH”… what does this mean? Knowing the context of those two, I can tell it doesn’t mean something bad, so the only extrapolations I could create were:
Designated Hitter
Dear Husband
Determined Hero
Delightful Hubby

Usually, it’s “Dear Husband,” but I am sure Dale would appreciate “Delightful Hubby” as well!

Melissa, That bowl of ramen looks sooo ono, I can taste it. I heard of this place and every time I past by it, it’s crowded so I know it’s guud. Now I will have to stop by for sure…

I agree Melissa, Goma Tei is really good. I’ve had the wakame ramen and it’s ono! and the wooden spoons they use are cool, very unique. I didn’t know they use Sun Noodles, no wonder so good.
May I detract from Goma Tei and also say that the Sun Noodles that are sold in the markets are a handy and tasty snack to enjoy at home, easy and fast to whip up.

I saw Yongchae yesterday, too. Shopping at Kapahulu Safeway hiding in dark shades and a urban ghetto hat. He said he seen yous two too. Sorry about Dr.Peabody’s bad taste women. Maybe if you paid him more he could afford a more high class woman. Next time try the Gomoku Saimin at Kenny’s at Kam Shopping Center in Kalihi.. more ono, less money.

Once again explain how high carb noodles swimming in oily dashi is an integral part of the Fit,Phat or Fatter Challenge? And how come you never blog about the food at ATM … is it that bad?

Dr. Peabody - feel free to take me to Goma Tei Ramen anytime!

I’m glad you finally ate at Goma Tei. Goma Tei is my most favorite place to eat Ramen. I also frequently run into TJ and his family there. You can also get the Chicken Katsu Tan Tan Ramen and ask to have the Katsu on the side on a separate plate so it doesn’t get soggy. But the best of them all is the Seafood Ramen. I only get it if Krista is paying.

Have you eaten at Goma Ichi by Ala Moana? I think the owner of Goma Tei used to be the partner of Goma Ichi. I love them both and can’t really taste the differences but I think most people can. Goma Ichi is Floyd’s favorite. I ran into him there once. Ask him the differences of Goma Ichi and Goma Tei.
P.S. YS is still the same (re: ordering the seafood ramen when Krista is paying). It is nice to see old friends are still in the same shape with the same belief. =)
